    The key difference is charge type. Cationic PAM carries a positive charge and is designed for negatively charged particles, which is why it is the standard choice for organic sludge dewatering in municipal and industrial wastewater treatment, as well as paper making retention. Anionic PAM carries a negative charge and works best for inorganic suspensions with positive or neutral particles, such as mineral processing tailings, river water clarification and some industrial wastewater.     Ionicity must match the negative charge density of your sludge. For typical municipal activated sludge, medium ionicity (30% to 50%) usually works well with belt or filter press dewatering. For industrial sludge with high organic content, medium-high ionicity (40% to 60%) is often needed. For low-charge sludge or paper making retention, low ionicity (10% to 30%) is preferred.     CPAM must be dissolved before use, and never add powder directly to sludge. Prepare a 0.1% to 0.3% solution in clean water at 20 to 40 degrees Celsius. Use gentle agitation, because high shear degrades the polymer chain and reduces flocculation power. Full dissolution takes 40 to 60 minutes.
