    Under normal operation and maintenance, cation exchange resin typically lasts 5 to 10 years. The lifespan depends on the raw water quality, regeneration frequency, and whether it is subjected to contamination or oxidative damage.

    When the resin becomes saturated, its exchange capacity needs to be restored: Hydrogen-type resin (for desalination): Typically regenerated using a 4-5% hydrochloric acid (HCl) or sulfuric acid solution. This displaces the adsorbed calcium and magnesium ions and reloads the resin with hydrogen ions. Sodium-type resin (for softening): Typically regenerated using a sodium chloride (NaCl, i.e., brine) solution.

    Sodium-type resin: Generally resistant to temperatures up to 120℃. Hydrogen-type resin: Generally resistant to temperatures up to 100℃. Exceeding these temperatures may cause structural damage or decomposition of the resin.

    Causes: Usually due to excessive impurities in raw water (suspended solids, organics), incomplete regeneration, or electrostatic adsorption when mixing anion and cation resins. Solutions: Air Scouring: Introduce compressed air to agitate the resin bed, causing it to loosen. Acid/Alkali Soaking: Soak the resin in a low-concentration acid or alkali solution for 4-8 hours to dissolve surface impurities. Enhance Pretreatment: Check the pre-filter to reduce impurities in the influent water.

    Keep Moist: Never allow the resin to dehydrate or air dry, or it will crack. If it loses water, first soak it in concentrated brine, then gradually dilute it. Protect from Freezing and Heat: The ideal storage temperature is 5-40℃. Temperatures below 0℃ can cause internal water to freeze and crack the resin; high temperatures can lead to bacterial growth or deterioration. Avoid Contamination: Keep away from iron containers, strong oxidants, and oils.
