    Welan Gum (CAS 96949-22-3) is a microbial polysaccharide biopolymer used as a rheology modifier, water retention agent, and suspending agent. Primary applications: concrete admixture, mortar additive, self-leveling compound, oil well cementing, drilling fluid viscosifier, and grouting material.

    Welan Gum offers superior thermal stability (stable up to 120°C vs 80°C for Xanthan) and maintains viscosity in high-salinity brines and seawater where Xanthan degrades. Its pseudoplastic rheology also provides better cuttings suspension at low shear while enabling easy pumping at high shear.

    At recommended dosage (0.01%-0.1% by cement weight), 28-day compressive strength retention is ≥95% vs control. Unlike some cellulose ethers, Welan Gum's pseudoplastic behavior allows proper cement hydration without excessive air entrainment.

    Welan Gum typically achieves equivalent water retention at 50-70% lower dosage than HPMC/HEMC. For example, 0.03% Welan Gum often matches the anti-sag performance of 0.1% HPMC, translating to lower additive cost per cubic meter.

    Pre-blend with dry cement or aggregate before adding water, or slowly sift into water under high-shear mixing (≥800 rpm). Avoid dumping directly into water as it hydrates rapidly and may form fish-eyes.
